Our community is excited to participate alongside all parishes, missions and Catholic centers in the Archdiocese to strengthen and renew our Church for the future. Please continue reading to learn how this campaign will benefit us.
It is with immense joy and heartfelt gratitude that I announce the launch of Called to Renew here at Mary Star. This campaign will provide much-needed funding for parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, including ours, as well as strengthen important ministries and programs that affect us all.
Each parish has been given a goal for the campaign. Our goal is $1,100,000 of which 50 percent (or $550,000) percent will remain at our parish. We will also retain 100 percent of the funds we collect over our goal.
Mary Star of the Sea has a very rich history here in San Pedro. Called to Renew will ensure we can continue to be a vital presence in our community. Details about how we plan to use our share of campaign funds are on the following page. Please take a moment to prayerfully discern how you can most generously support this campaign. I also encourage you to consider making a five-year pledge, which will allow us the best opportunity to reach our goal.
This is a wonderful parish, and I am amazed at how our community has always worked together to meet needs that arise. I know you will do whatever you can to make this campaign a success.
We entrust our Called to Renew campaign to the intercessions of our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph as we continue to build up the Body of Christ here in San Pedro.
Pledged over 5 years for the Called to Renew Campaign.

Parish Needs
Parish School Project
The school is an important part of our parish community. Perhaps you have children who have attended, or currently attend our school. Studies show that students who attend Catholic Schools are more likely to remain Catholic as adults and continue to the mission of the Church. We wish to support our school by upgrading the old high school building, currently used for junior high students and Religious Education, by installing an infrastructure fiber optic system that will enable us to better meet the technological needs of each student.
Upgrade HVAC
Our church was built at a time when indoor cooling/heating was inefficient and depending on the time of year, the temperature in the church can get uncomfortable. We have recently replaced two units in the church, but we must complete the job. The remaining units are not only inefficient, but they are no longer properly heating and cooling the church. We will install two new HVAC systems to help moderate the temperature in the church to make our worship experience more comfortable.
Interior Painting the Church
It has been many years since the interior of the church has been painted. Proceeds from the campaign will be used to paint the church and add additional decorative accents in the various shrines.
Roofing
The roof on the church/rectory is past its useful life expectancy and occasionally we experience leaks. Up until now we have patched sections of the roof; however, we can no longer put off the inevitable. We will replace the roof to keep further damage from happening.
*As always, I am most grateful to each of you for your generosity and support as we move forward to this next phase of our Parish improvements. May God reward you!
A Bold Plan of Renewal
We — the Catholic faithful — are the agents of renewal for Church and society. I am grateful for this opportunity to walk alongside clergy and parishioners in strengthening our parishes and ministries, the heart of our Archdiocese.
